Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah is an American musician, actress, and rapper. Her performance as a singer, music as well as a film and television artist has earned the actress the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also was awarded an Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah is the daughter of Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. as a police officer and Rita, a instructor in Irvington High School. Latifah's parents separated when she was just 10 years old. Latifah was raised in the Baptist church and she attended Catholic schools in Newark New Jersey. Her stage name Latifah meaning delicate and very gentle in Arabic was handed to her by her cousin at the age of she was just eight years old. Latifah, 5-foot-10" tall power forward on her high school team was always a tall girl. She sang "Home" from The Wiz in the course of a show in her high school. Latifah was a member of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her beatboxing career. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah after hearing the song. The singer released her debut single Wrath of My Madness, in the year 1988.
